Boss GP debutant and former F1 driver Tarso Marques, driving a Benetton B197 Judd 4.2 V10 kept his cool in tricky conditions to take the overall win at the historic Imola circuit in Italy.
Marques was all smiles, “I am so happy. It has been a great, trouble-free weekend so far. Sunday might be more difficult, but I will do my best”. The Brazilian recorded his maiden BOSS GP victory in his debut race, finishing ahead of team mate Frits van Eerd.
And the Dutchman was very lucky to come runner-up. “On the Installation Lap my Minardi caught fire. I turned to the pits immediately, where we extinguished the flames and I changed to my trusty Benetton B199 Judd. Ending the race on the podium is somewhat a miracle. I had great fights out there today.” A nice surprise was to have the legendary Formula One car designer and team owner Giancarlo Minardi present the trophies on the podium.
Peter Milavec from Austria, driving his Panoz Judd came third saying: “That was not a bad wet race from us at all. No problems with the tyre temperatures this time. But we are much quicker in the dry, so I will be on attack mode tomorrow.”
In Sunday’s final, Frits van Eerd managed to push Tarso Marques off his throne. The Dutchman outpaced his team mate and naturally, Van Eerd was delighted about his second win of the season saying: “I have now won on two of my favourite tracks, in Monza and in Imola. It was a great ending to a good season and I am already looking forward to 2017. Maybe I will enter a new car.”
Behind van Eerd and Marques, who congratulated his VES Racing team-mate on his victory and is considering a return to the series, Peter Milavec came third securing runner-up spot in the championship. “Another podium finish and thus becoming vice champion, what more could I ask for? I am really happy.”
